Marriage License

To marry on Martha's Vineyard you must have a marriage license issued in Massachusetts. Both parties must apply in person for a marriage license.

Visit any town clerk (see contact info below) to file for a marriage license. Once issued, a marriage license is valid for 60 days and can be used anywhere in the state.

After you file for a marriage license, there is a waiting period of three days before it can be picked up or mailed to you. A marriage license costs about $15.

Medical Certificates

As of January 28, 2005, medical certificates are not required to obtain a marriage license in Massachusetts.

Your Ceremony

The state of Massachusetts does not require witnesses at your ceremony. The officiate, whether a clergy member or a justice of the peace, must complete and sign the original license and return it to the clerk of the city or town where the license was issued.
