Art: See them while you can at Saltwater Gallery
September 29, 2005

In "The Chilmark Schoolhouse," Ashley Medowski depicts a 19th-century folk tale about a schoolhouse on wheels. The house itself is hand-shingled and has a cupola and school bell.

Buck Shank, Don Groover, Barbara Hoy, and Bob Schellhammer livened up the show with their bluegrass tunes.

Tucked between Uncle Seth's Pond and Lambert's Cove Inn off Lambert's Cove Road in West Tisbury is Ashley Medowski's Saltwater Gallery. At one time it was her grandfather's fishing barn. In recent years the restored building has served as the venue for Ms. Medowski's annual summer show in which she features her own mixed media works.
This past August, the theme "Built Landscapes: Farms, Barns, Out Buildings" incorporated numerous assemblages that Ashley constructed from metals, wood, and handmade objects. She describes her pieces as three-dimensional wall hangings. "They are very much like miniature set designs with a foreground and a background."
This year's event drew quite a crowd. Island musicians entertained visitors, who strolled between gallery and yard looking at art and enjoying refreshments. Though all Ashley's pieces sold, some are still available to view. To see more of Ashley's work, call 508-645-2152. The gallery is currently open by appointment.
