Chilmark

September 29, 2005

By Jacqueline Sexton - 508-645-2895 - jschil@adelphia.net

It's hard to imagine what being an evacuee would be like. For my sister-in-law, who lives in a low-lying area of Houston, last week was an unsettling exercise in mandatory evacuation because of threats of flooding posed by the advancing Rita. She sealed everything that fit in plastic bags, stowed them as high up as she could, tried to make hotel reservations in Austin or Dallas, checked to see that she had "important papers" and late Thursday night joined the throngs on the freeway with her 15-year-old cat, Kirby, her daughter, her granddaughter and their Jack Russell terrier, Peete. After traveling four or five miles in three and a half hours, they left the highway and took refuge with her son, who lives on higher ground, away from water. They were all lucky and were home safe, dry, unharmed, and with electricity by Saturday. But what of the immensity of the losses suffered by thousands of others in the Gulf states?

Here in Chilmark, with another month of the hurricane "season" still to look forward to, we hope and pray that any future storms go out to sea, as far from land as possible.

Phyllis Conway e-mailed to say she had learned from Bruce Nevin that his mother, Doris Nevin, is recovering from a severe illness at a rehabilitation facility in Cambridge. Phyllis does not know the name of the facility but anyone wishing to send her cards or notes can take a chance and send them to Rehabilitation Facility, Doris Nevin, (patient), 1575 Cambridge St., Cambridge, MA 02138. We wish her a full and quick recovery.

Leslie Baker will have a retrospective show of 20 years of children's book illustrations at the library from Saturday, Oct. 1 through Oct. 28. Art from the books, as well as the books themselves, will be on display. Everyone, especially children, is invited to an opening reception on Saturday, Oct. 1 from 3 to 4 pm at the library

Bonnie and Bob George are back from a trip to Spain, about which they are enthusiastic. They especially enjoyed seeing Picasso's "Guernica."

The annual Alzheimer's walk will take place this Saturday, Oct. 1 starting at noon from the Tisbury Senior Center to the Oak Bluffs Senior Center. The walk is to raise money and create awareness of available support locally for those who suffer from the disease.

The walking women will hike the Peaked Hill Reservation next Thursday, Oct. 6, starting at 9 am. The reservation is on the left side of Tabor House Road, half a mile from Middle Road. Call Judy Maynes for more details at 508-645-3460. Newcomers are welcome.

Happy birthday to September celebrants. Greg Mayhew's birthday was September 19, and his son Galen's is today, Sept. 29. Marilyn Hollinshead had a double celebration — her birthday on September 26 and her and Warren's anniversary on September 12. Happiness to all of you!
