Today was one of those delectable fall days on Martha's Vineyard. It was warm but not too hot. I enjoyed a cup of coffee with Pop on the front porch. Then I got to go for a walk with a friend, followed by a quick swim at Chappy Point. When I got home, I made a nice dinner, put the kids to bed, and now I get to partake in one of my guilty pleasures, as the new season of "Desperate Housewives" starts tonight. Life is good!

After writing about our friend Cookie's solo flight last week, I learned that one of our other favorite Katama Airfield employees also took her solo flight this summer. Alyssa Fitzpatrick, the 18-year-old daughter of Tom and Lisa Fitzpatrick, handles the phones and arrangements for Classic Aviator bi-plane rides. She has been flying for a couple of years now and this summer she also took her first solo flight. Her shirttails hang at the airfield as well. It's great to know a female pilot! Congratulations to Alyssa.

If you're looking for something to do this weekend, the 21st Annual COMSOG Festival is happening on Sunday, October 2, from 12 to 3 pm on New York Ave., Oak Bluffs. And don't forget the Harvest Festival at the new Ag Hall in West Tisbury from noon until 10 pm on Saturday. You'll find games, food, music, horses, and lots of fun for the whole family.

Happy birthday to three of Riley's best buds, Amber and Cory Medeiros, who turned six on Sept. 21 and Curtis Fournier, who celebrated on September 26. Happy birthday wishes also go out to my niece, Evie Gardner Fleisher, who turned five on Sept. 27.

Happy Anniversary to Bob Fynbo and Felicia Cheney, who celebrated nine years of wedded bliss this week.

I want to commend Robert Smith and Jim Cimeno of Walter Smith Plumbing, as they recently sent a letter to all of their customers and business associates informing them of the You Have a Friend, David Honey Family Fund that has been set up at the Martha's Vineyard Co-Operative Bank. The fund was set up on behalf of the family of their friend and employee, David Honey, who was killed in an accident this summer. Many businessmen would not cross the line of mixing business with personal matters and I personally think it is a true testament to both Robert and Jim, and to the lasting legacy of David, that they felt this letter was appropriate. It is the kind of action that shows us all that personal loss and caring for one another should take precedence over business. It's what our Island community is about and I, for one, am very impressed.

The Edgartown Library will be giving away their "lost and found" items, mostly coats and hats and such, to the Second Hand Store in two weeks. If anyone has lost anything in the past, they are welcome to stop by the library before then to go through things.

For people who are packing up and heading back to the mainland for the winter, remember to do a last check of your sheds and basements before locking up. You never know when a cat or dog may wander through an open door and become trapped. I wouldn't put it past my Wagger kitty and I assume he's not alone in his penchant for exploring anywhere he can.

Have a great week everyone. Get me your news!
