Oak Bluffs

As the daylight hours become shorter, gone are the 5 am beautiful sunrises as they have been replaced by grey dawns when I awake at that hour. Now I have to wait almost another hour before the sun brings that beautiful rosy glow to the horizon. I think it is nature's way of getting me in practice for the winter slowdown of activities — if there is such a thing.

The Oak Bluffs School certainly got off to a running start and it seems that they have a never-ending list of events planned. The after-school Library program began last Monday and will run each week from Monday through Thursday from 2:30 until 4. For safety's sake and to help the crossing guards, be sure to use your directional lights when entering or leaving Trade Winds Road.

The Farm Institute is again offering its "Fall After School Program" which began yesterday and will run for eight weeks. For further info and to register, please contact Melinda DeFeo at 508-627-4173.

If your son or daughter would like to play hockey this season and the expense is a little overwhelming, consider signing up for a scholarship to help defray the cost of ice time and equipment. All inquiries are confidential. Just e-mail mvhockeyhelp@ verizon.net.

The 16th Annual Oak Bluffs Columbus Day five Kilometer Road Race and One Mile Fun Run has added a new event this year. There will be a Police and Fire Department Challenge. The race, which will be held on Sunday, October 9 is a benefit for the Women's Health Network of the Vineyard Nursing Association, and will start from the Wesley Hotel promptly at 11 am. Runners may pre-register online, by mail or at the Wesley Hotel on Sat., Oct. 8 for $15. Registration will be at 9 am on Sun., Oct. 9 at the Wesley Hotel. Forms and additional information can be found on www.obroadrace.com.

Last Wed., I traveled to Phoenix to take part in the three-day Life Teen Music and Liturgy Conference. When I arrived there, I was met by Michelle Roberts, the Pastoral Associate and Youth Minister for Good Shepherd Parish here on the Island. We were treated to wonderful speakers, great music — sung not only by everyone present but also well-known musicians and composers — and met numerous caring and hospitable people along the way, many of them teens who could not have made us feel more welcome. It truly was an amazing experience. Oh by the way, the temperature never went below 100 degrees and got as high as 109.

Last Saturday was Oak Bluffs Beach Clean-Up Day. Twelve bags of litter were collected. Nicole Morey of the highway department office coordinated the collected litter pick-up. M.V. Gourmet Café and Bakery provided coffee and donuts for the clean-up crew.

Sunday was a perfect day for the Annual Dukes County Firemen's Muster held at Ocean Park.

Muster Teams from West Tisbury, Tisbury, Oak Bluffs and Milbury competed in many contests.

West Tisbury did double duty as they also volunteered some of their firemen to join the Oak Bluffs team that was short some men. Calling themselves the "West Bluffs" team they actually managed to win the muster! Congratulations to all those who worked so hard to make it a success.

Linda and Ed BenDavid have returned from a short visit to Clermont, Florida where they attended the baptism of their grandson Evan Christopher BenDavid. Evan is the son of Debra and Aaron BenDavid. Joining them there were Aaron's brother Jason and Lynn Webster along with their daughter Maple BenDavid. Debra's Sister Rebecca Steinbach and Jason were Evan's godparents. The families had a great time visiting and catching up on all the news.

We send Birthday Smiles to Kenny Davey who partied on Sept. 24, Dustin Shaw whose birthday was Sept. 25, Martin Moreis's was yesterday, Sept. 28, and Will deBettencourt IV will be celebrating on Oct. 3.

Send your news along to me, Monday morning at the very latest please. Enjoy your week.
