Theatre: Sin of omission
When examining two types of sin, the sin of commission and the sin of omission, poet Ogden Nash writes that it is those things we fail to do that are the greater sins.

Music: A choral conclusion
This weekend, just as the summer season opens, the Island Community Chorus concludes another year of singing, presenting its 10th annual concert at the Tabernacle in Oak Bluffs at 8 pm, Saturday, June 30.

Dance: Season opener at The Yard
The Yard's 35th annual Patricia N. Nanon Residency culminates this weekend with a program of new works by Yard founder Patricia Nanon, guest choreographer Jonathan Riedel of the José Limón Company, and Yard alumna Catherine Miller.

Music: Rock on
Rock and roll will never die. It is alive and well in the music of young people on the Island. Six bands jammed at Outerland last Tuesday night, and except for Mercy Beat, professional musicians who performed as a back-up band, all the rockers were school-aged kids.

Art: Superlatives abound at Garden Club show
Two floors filled with colorful floral arrangements complementing an array of works by well-known local artists greeted visitors to the Old Mill in West Tisbury, the site of the Martha's Vineyard Garden Club's bi-annual Beauty and the Best exhibit last weekend.

Poetry: An actor hones his skills
John Basinger's copy of Paradise Lost is so dog-eared, so completely falling from its binding, it looks as if someone had thoroughly chewed and swallowed it.

A Mello Tradition - family fun on the fourth
With a bright red yarn wig and red dots painted on my face, I made my debut in the Edgartown Fourth of July Parade as Raggedy Andy 26 years ago.

Astrology: Mercury's still retrograde...
One of my astrologer friends believes that retrograde Mercury periods are a key factor for our sanity. It is a time that teaches us to let go of control, to give up planning and to accept the unknown and unexpected.

Off North Road: Naomi Feil's "Validation"
A funny thing happened on my way to Windemere, Martha's Vineyard Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, when I started my hospital training at the Rhode Island Hospital in 1952. My way had in fact begun on July 1, when I walked to my assignment, the emergency room, as a fledgling intern.

Birds: Seasonal shift
The vagaries of weather on the Island continue to amaze even the most casual observer. Due to the influence of the surrounding waters and predominant winds, Island weather is different and is a large part of what makes it attractive to both bird species and humans, especially during the summer months.

Jammin' for Sam
The Outerland was hopping Sunday night with a non-stop lineup of local musicians who played and sang their hearts out for nearly five hours in support of seven-year-old Samantha Cassidy and her family.

A local feast
What if you could feast on a four-course gourmet meal that had been harvested almost entirely on the Island? The chicken raised not 100 yards away. The succulent tomatoes grown down the road and picked hours before you ate them.

Tisbury class helps Heifer project
John Custer's sixth grade social studies class at the Tisbury School (pictured here) raised $672.76 for the Heifer International project.
