Rams rumble
Lynn Classical's division 2 football team proved to be big, strong, and fast as it handed Martha's Vineyard (divison 3A) its first loss of the season, 34-19, at the Dan McCarthy field, Saturday.
The Rams received the opening kick off and moved the ball, from their 37 to the MV 12-yard line on 10 rushes and a pass before giving up the ball. Tristan Atwood ran for a yard and a Ryan Rossi to John Swan pass netted eight. After an incomplete pass, the Islanders hoped to catch Lynn sleeping with a run at fourth and one. It didn't work.
Taking over on the MV 19, the Rams were penalized for holding and began again on the 29. (It was their third penalty in the first quarter.) From there quarterback Mike Quintana found Quivari Jackson in the end zone for the game's first TD.
The attempt for a two-point conversion failed.
After a short kick, the Islanders began play on their own 40 yard line. Two runs by Alan Fortes netted seven yards and a pass to Swan gave MV a first down on the Lynn 45 where the Islanders stalled and E.J. Sylvia punted out of bounds on the Ram's 32.
In the second quarter, the Rams drove 68 yards in a dozen plays and increased their lead to 12-0.
On the ensuing kick, Tony Cortez found a seam and broke tackles before being pulled down at mid field - a 40-yard return. The Islanders picked up a first down on a run by Atwood, and then stalled. Punter Sylvia was rushed, hurried his kick to the Lynn 32. On third and seven, Quintana passed to James Green for a 65-yard scoring play. The two-point run by Chad Quintana made it 20-0, the score at the half.
The second half began on a high note for the Vineyard. Lucas Landers covered the kick on the MV 35. Atwood carried to the Lynn 45 . Anthony Sullo and Fortes made it first down on the 33. A Rossi to Matt Lucier pass reached the one yard line from where Fortes followed his surging line into the end zone and it was 20-6. A bad snap foiled the try for an extra point.
Lynn began a 16-play drive from their 36 yard line that carried well into the fourth quarter, all running plays, climaxed by a five-yard plunge by Jeff Watson.
Once again, the try for a two-point conversion was stopped.
The Vineyard began play near midfield after Nick Koines smothered the ball on the MV 43. Ten plays later Atwood carrried into the end zone from the six and Sylvia's kick made it 26-13.
The on-side kick was downed by Lynn at midfield. Green scored his third touchdown of the afternoon on a 38-yard scamper. This time the two-point conversion was good and Lynn led, 34-13.
Purple pride showed itself in the closing minutes with the outcome of the game no longer in doubt. Swan returned the kick 30 yards, then caught a Rossi pass for a six-yard gain. After two incompletions, Lynn was penalized for a late hit personal foul giving the Vineyard a first and 10 on the Lynn 23. At third and five, Atwood ran for a first down on the nine. Fortes took it in from there.
Final score: Lynn Classical 34, Martha's Vineyard 19.

Field Hockey fortunes
The MVRHS field hockey team won two and lost one last week, beating Nantucket Wednesday, 2-1, bowing to Old Rochester Friday, 2-0 and shutting out Fairhaven, Saturday, 1-0.
The only goal in the Fairhaven game was by Kathryn DeBettencourt who took a perfect pass from Katie Keppler in full flight right in front of the Fairhaven net. The goalie didn't have a chance. The team is even on the season at 3-3.
Tomorrow the girls host Apponequet at 3:30.
